In 2006, Melissa Keen was diagnosed with metastatic papillary thyroid cancer. She was treated with a thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine. Following this all seemed well. Today, she has survived 4 recurrences and more treatment. As a survivor of this disease, Melissa searched for ways to connect with others who were experiencing the same through sharing her story.
It became apparent that there was a lack of readily available information, resources and support surrounding thyroid cancer or disease locally in BC. This led to the start of a friendship between our society founders Melissa and metastatic papillary thyroid cancer survivor, Angela McLean. In 2017, the two bonded over their similar journeys as cancer warriors, women and mothers. Today, the creation of Thyroid BC exists so no one else facing thyroid cancer or disease would feel alone. These two resilient women are taking action by sharing their experiences and support to those who are on their journey to recovery.
ThyroidBC is not just a foundation. It is an active community of Thyroid Cancer survivors, family members, physicians and other healthcare practitioners dedicated to spreading awareness, promoting early detection and sharing the treatments and therapies which save lives to make getting better feel better. Please sign up to attend one of our events, give some time to support those in need and be apart of saving a life.
